White Grizzly Bear

white grizzly bearGrizzly bear fur can be nearly black, red, auburn, dark brown, light brown, blonde and even nearly white like this grizzly bear above.  When looking at a white grizzly you can really imagine the evolution of the polar bear.  Polar bears evolved from grizzly bears fairly recently on the evolutionary scale.  Grizzlies and polar bears can even mate and produce fertile offspring.  Clearly, the white color variation in grizzly bears held an advantage for hunting around snow and ice.  Grizzlies are also very adept swimmers like polar bears.  In fact, one summer we spotted a grizzly bear swimming out to a nearby island populated with breeding gulls and puffins.  The island was covered in grizzly bear tracks.  To read more about our day trip to this island, click here.
